Mindful Munchkins

  • Enoch Pratt Free Library - Southeast Anchor Library 3601 Eastern Baltimore, MD, 21225 United States (map)

Welcome to our Mindful Munchkins Children's Workshop, where we focus on developing physical skills while also enhancing the mental well-being of your little ones (ages 7-12). This month, we’re diving into the world of art for self-expression, emotional vocabulary, and creativity.

Activity Overview:

The Ultimate Emotion Charades Challenge - Celestial Hope Rising Services Therapist

Unlock the power of emotions in the most fun and engaging way possible with our Ultimate Emotion Charades Challenge workshop! This workshop transforms the traditional game of charades into an exciting team-based showdown. Kids will be grouped into teams and compete in lively, imaginative battles, acting out a wide range of emotions while their opponents guess. It’s an incredible opportunity to boost emotional intelligence, teamwork, and communication skills, all while having a blast!

Radiant Child Portraits (Introduction to Abstract Expressionism) - Lindsey Atwell, Artist

In this workshop, kids will explore how emotions can be conveyed through art using simple colors, lines, and shapes. They will discover the expressive power of zigzag lines and the color blue while learning about the influential artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The session will reference iconic works, such as Pablo Picasso’s Blue Period and the film Inside Out 2, to emphasize the emotional depth of expressionism.

The workshop begins with guided instruction where kids will free-write their thoughts in English or Spanish, encouraging an unfiltered stream of consciousness. Using color construction paper that reflects their current emotional state, they will create Basquiat-inspired portraits, incorporating torn paper from their free-writing as a collage border.

Throughout this creative process, kids will have the opportunity to explore various artistic elements with provided materials, including drawing paper, markers, glue sticks, and scissors. The workshop will conclude with a reflection on how creative outlets can help identify and express emotions, emphasizing that everyone has their unique medium for expression—be it drawing, painting, music, writing, or sports.

Maryland Art Place Presentation - Caitlin Gill

Caitlin Gill will deliver an informative presentation on the Maryland Art Place Kiddo Exhibit, set to take place in April 2025. She will discuss the exhibit and provide valuable insights on how kids can have their artwork featured. This is a great opportunity to learn about showcasing creativity in our vibrant artistic community!
